Marketing and Publicity Coordinator
EREWHON BOOKS is a new independent speculative fiction publisher distributed by Workman Publishing. We opened in June 2018 and will debut our first season of new titles in 2020. We focus on novel-length works of adult and upper-YA speculative fiction, including science fiction, fantasy, horror, and other subgenres, but are open to other works of interest to SF&F readers.
Erewhon is seeking a creative and enthusiastic marketing and publicity coordinator to help develop and guide the public profile of our new company and our boutique list of high-quality SF&F books and authors as we launch our first seasons of books, working in areas that include advertising and promotions, social media, and sales.
In addition to demonstrated expertise in and passion for science fiction and fantasy and literary fiction, we are seeking someone who enjoys creative and flexible thinking, and who can create and drive strategies for books to thrive in the digital age and discover new ways to connect with readers.
Preferred skills and background:
At least 3 years publicity or marketing experience and some experience in complementary fields such as internet marketing, advertising and promotions, social media, and sales, preferably in SF&F or literary fiction.
Experience creating and executing highly successful title-based media campaigns with demonstrated results.
Established network of broadcast, print, and digital contacts and publishing professionals.
Awareness and understanding of the speculative fiction and/or literary fiction communities.
Experience sourcing and working with vendors to create promotional items.
Experience establishing budgets for marketing, publicity, and related departments
Experience using photo or design programs to create promotional imagery.
Experience working with a small team and flexibility and enthusiasm for taking on new tasks outside of defined areas.
Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills, attention to detail, and the capacity to multitask, prioritize, meet deadlines, demonstrate good follow-through, and work independently and collaboratively.
We recognize that many good candidates will not have all of these skills, and we will work closely with the new hire and train them in areas that they do not yet have experience with.
Building a plan and budget for all marketing, publicity and adjacent activities for a small list of books, in conjunction with the Publisher.
Building strong relationships with our authors to ensure enthusiastic participation in our publishing efforts.
Developing and implementing title-specific publicity campaigns for frontlist titles, including preparation of publicity materials, pitching media outlets for coverage, and creation of author events and tours.
Coordinating submissions to publishing calendars and literary awards.
Developing and maintaining press and influencer mailing lists and building strong relationships with key media.
Writing and preparing advertising, marketing, and sales materials and campaigns.
Creating sell sheets, samplers, postcards, and other promotional materials.
Conceptualizing, organizing, implementing, and promoting author events and tours on select titles.
Maintaining and developing company social media content (including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, newsletter, etc.), including content planning, execution, and fan and author engagement.
Attending events and conferences, including local, national, and international genre/industry/library events and rights conferences, on behalf of the company, and helping organize our publisher presence there.
Salary and title will be commensurate with experience. If you can submit a desired salary range, that is helpful, but not required.
Erewhon offers a competitive salary, full benefits, and a friendly working environment. This is a full-time position based in our offices in Manhattan.
Erewhon is an Equal Opportunity Employer and will consider all applicants without regard to race, national origin, religion, age, ethnic derivation, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or protected veteran status.
